Various studies have shown the benefits of turmeric and the compound curcumin that it contains (for more information check out "Turmeric For Dogs: 5 Surprising Health Benefits" at Dogs Naturally Magazine). These benefits include:
As anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant
Arthritis pain
Gastrointestinal disorders
Protects liver from toxins
Can help treat and prevent cancer
The good news is that it's really easy to make a turmeric-based paste called Golden Paste that makes it easy to give your dog a dose of turmeric, with all the potential health benefits that can bring.
Preparation Time: 5 mins Cooking Time: 10 mins INGREDIENTS • 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper • 1/3 cup organic cold pressed coconut oil • 1/2 cup organic turmeric powder 1-3 cups Water INSTRUCTIONS 1 Add the turmeric powder and one cup of water to a saucepan 2 Place the saucepan over low heat and stir the mixture for 7 -10 minutes, adding water when the mixture thickens too much and tends to stick to the bottom of the saucepan. The mixture should be a yoghurt thickness. 3 Take the saucepan off the heat, add the black pepper and coconut oil, and stir well. 4 Allow the mixture to cool in the saucepan, and then transfer it to an airtight container – a glass jar is good because it won’t get stained by the turmeric. It can be stored in the fridge for up to 14 days. 5 It can also be frozen in ice-cube moulds and stored in an airtight container in the freezer, where it can be stored for at least 3 months. DAILY INTAKE Small to medium dogs 1tsp - Larger dogs 1 tbsp Start with ¼ of daily intake and gradually work up to full amount
